A Different Taitung: The Story of Taitung’s Nine Year Transformation
Taitung underwent significant changes under the leadership of Huang Chien-ting. With international events such as hot air balloon festivals, surfing competitions, and triathlons, Taitung has successfully attracted over six million tourists annually, creating conditions for local economic prosperity. In 2016, Taitung was selected as one of the top ten tourist cities in Asia by the Lonely Planet travel guide, receiving international recognition. The Fair Winds Foundation invited Huang to share his successful experience in local governance. Huang actively developed the tourism industry, enhanced the city’s visibility, recruited businesses, revitalized assets, supported local industries, and promoted Taitung’s specialties. He was not only named “Five-Star County Magistrate” by the Commonwealth magazine five times, but also ranked second in the Economic Daily News happiness index survey of Taiwan’s cities before leaving office, with the highest subjective sense of happiness in Taiwan.
